How are sleep apnea and acid reflux linked?

I have both sleep apnea and acid reflux disease. I've heard some sources say that sleep apnea causes acid reflux, and others say that acid reflux causes sleep apnea. How are sleep apnea and acid reflux linked? What ways are there to treat them at the same time?

Negative intrathoracic pressure during apnea events helps open up the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), causing acid reflux. Using CPAP creates positive intrathoracic pressure, thus helping to keep the LES closed and preventing acid reflux!
