What is REM sleep? REM sleep is rapid eye movement sleep. This part of sleep is the part where you are dreaming. You process information which you collected during your day activities and integrate it with the past experiences and memories, thus create new memories. REM sleep is also necessary for forming new ideas, new associations and coming up with new solutions. One of the most common causes of loss of memory at an older age is sleep apnea associated with loss of REM sleep. REM sleep is also necessary to maintain proper mental health. People who do not dream seem to have enriched anxiety, depression and other emotional difficulties.
