Why does being overweight affect the quality of sleep a person gets?

I have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Someone told me that being overweight could be the cause of my problems. How does being overweight affect your sleep quality?

Obesity can be a factor in that it makes obstructive sleep apnea worse. Sleep apnea can prevent you from staying asleep during the night, as disordered breathing disrupts your sleep. Depending on how overweight you are, there may be other factors. Has anyone told you that you snore, snort, gasp for air, or stop breathing while sleeping? Are you sleepy during the day and/or require naps? It would be reasonable to speak with your primary care physician or a board certified sleep specialist.
