A Somnodent is only one type of FDA approved appliance to treat sleep apnea. There are many others and there are different applications for different situations. A Somnodent device is best for those people that primarily clench their teeth. If a patient tends to have more grinding movements, they will either find the appliance uncomfortable, or it could break. It has titration screws on the sides that allow customizable adjustments. A dentist familiar with various appliances and their best applications should be consulted. Oral sleep appliances are not a "one size fits all".

The Somnodent device is a mandibular (lower jaw) advancement device. It supports your jay in a forward position while you are asleep so that your lower jaw and tongue do not fall back against your throat and close off your airway. The Somnodent device by SomnodMed is different from other devices in several was. First, you have a lot of freedom of movement of our mouth while you sleep which allows you to open your mouth, talk and drink. Next, all SomnoDent devices have a 3-year warrant. Also, the SomnoMed MATRx enables a sleep laboratory to predict the patient’s target protrusive position during the sleep study which will result in effective treatment of the patient’s obstructive sleep apnea.
