Yes you need doctors orders for a sleep study to be performed.

If you have a PPO insurance, typically a referral is not required prior to a sleep study. In many cases, however it is a good idea to be evaluated by a sleep disorder specialist to ensure the proper testing and follow-up will be conducted.

In most cases a referral is not needed to see a sleep specialist for a consultation. It really depends on the criteria set by your insurance company. An actual sleep study, however, is typically completed after a sleep specialist determines it is necessary and prior approval is granted by your insurance provider.

For insurance to cover the cost of the sleep study yes. It is our policy that a physician refer you to us. Your PCP is allowed to refer you or we are happy to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gibson, our Board Certified Sleep Specialists.
