How do you know if your are relying too much on sleeping pills?

I use a sleeping pill about twice a week to help me fall asleep. Work keeps me very busy and it is important that I have a lot of energy. I have been taking a couple sleeping pills a week for a couple months now and am beginning to get worried that I am relying on them too much. How do you know if you are using sleeping pills too often? What alternatives to sleeping pills might I consider?

Are you taking Ambien, Lunesta, Restoril, or Xanax? Pharmaceutical medication typically states in the prescribing information if a medication should be taken for a minimum amount of time or doses. This would be the first place to look. Depending on the medication you are taking it may or may not be habit forming. There are alternatives to prescription sleep medications such as over the counter Melatonin. However, without seeing you in our clinic and obtaining more details, we cannot recommend Melatonin or any other sleep aides.
