Are sleep studies covered by most insurance?

This question was asked in Kingston, Iowa on 09/27/2012.
My wife says I stop breathing at night and snore a lot. I am overweight. I feel pretty rested in the morning usually. How much is a study, test, consultation? Is this kind of thing covered by most insurance?

Yes. Sleep services are covered by Medicare and most medical insurance plans. The cost of visits and procedures varies, so you should inquire with your local healthcare provider.

Yes, 99.9% of insurance policies cover sleep studies. They realize that treatment of most sleep disorders saves them far more than visits to the emergency room or admission to the hospital for conditions caused by sleep issues. The cost for a sleep medicine consultation is in the neighborhood of $300 and a sleep study costs about $1500. Again, most all insurances cover the expense. If you stop breathing at night and snore you likely have sleep apnea. Being overweight is a risk factor for sleep apnea.

A sleep consultation and sleep test is covered by health insurance. Health plans are aware that many people need treatment for sleep disorders.
